Monday Inspiration – Sebastião Salgado

May 25, 2015 10:16 pm

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!!!

The photographer that I would like to talk about today is Sebastião Salgado. Not only does he work inspires me a lot but also the aim for his work.

His images depicts the complexities of the human conditions and wildlife. His work is depicted in black and white with such complexity and simplicity at the same time.

Salgado’s work for years raised global awareness to varying human conditions resulting in two well known books entitled Workers (1993) and Migration (2000).

In 2004, he travelled for eight years to document landscape, wildlife, seascapes and indigenous people. The result is a spectacular 200 black and white images entitled Genesis which I was lucky enough to see.

The aim of this project was to raise the public’s awareness about urgent and pressing environmental and climate change. During his travels, he documented arctic and desert landscapes, tropical rainforests, marine and other wildlife and communities still living according to ancestral traditions.

For someone that lived most of their life in the city, it is a real eye opener to see that our planet still has vast and remote regions where nature reigns in silent and in pristine condition.

Below are two videos, one of a very moving talk given by Salgado himself explaining the drive behind the Genesis series and the second video going through a few of the images from the series by Ted Forbes.

Have a wonderful start to the week everybody!!!!
