The rule of third………..

October 20, 2011 7:33 pm

The rule of thirds has been considered over the years as the GOLDEN RULE in photography, design and painting.

What is the rule of thirds?
If you can imagine dividing a picture in three both horizontally and Vertically similar to what you can see the LCD of most digital cameras. This will result in 9 parts of the picture.

After this division, they are 4 important points identified by the rule of the thirds as being the points or lines of interest to frame an image.

Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

It is said that by framing a subject in such a way creates more balance And draws the viewer attention to interact with the image in a more natural way. A studie carried to test this point has shown that people’s eyes usually go straight towards these intersections when viewing these images rather that the centre of a picture.

I learned this from a photographer called Ted Forbes podcast. After that i started Looking at pictures in a different way. I noticed that a lot of photographers work obey this rule. It’s unclear wgether it is intentional or not.
Personally, it think the rule of thirds is a guideline but not a rule to obey by. Not obeying the rule of thirds doesn’t mean that we end up with odd looking photos. But it good to familiarise ourselves with it in order to experiment, and let our creativity loose.

I personnally believe that RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN. Once you become familiar with rules then it can be FUN to break them.
